Blood Tests

Blood tests Many of you will have heard that the NHS has a national shortage of blood test bottles. GP surgeries and hospitals have been instructed to make severe cuts in testing until 17 September, with NHS England warning that ‘supply is likely to remain challenging for a significant period’ thereafter. Last week Spilsby Surgery ordered 400 bottles and were restricted to just 50. The manufacturer has stated ‘In addition to increased demand, we are seeing continued transportation challenges that have affected all industries, including port and transport capacity, air freight capacity and UK border challenges. Suppliers are also challenged to meet increased demand for raw materials and components’. GP

Back to School

Back to school September’s return to school will inevitably lead to a rise in Covid infections. When an NHS worker lives in the same house as someone with Covid, they aren’t allowed to attend work for 10 days – even if they themselves have been doubly vaccinated and have a negative PCR swab. If family test positive one by one, the NHS employee could be away from the workplace for over 2 weeks! Many of Spilsby Surgery’s staff have school-age children, and we anticipate the autumn will prove an ongoing challenge for our team. Care Navigators, secretaries, nurses and doctors don’t work as effectively from home – especially if they

Minor Conditions

Minor Conditions The NHS expects that in most cases, short-lived minor conditions and symptoms can and will be dealt with by community pharmacists and not by GP practices. Examples include stings, congestion and earache, sore throats and mouths, coughs, hay fever, flu, sore eyes, upset stomachs, cystitis and thrush, aches and pains and joint swelling, common skin problems. If you contact the Surgery with these problems, please expect to be directed to a local pharmacy for an appointment with the pharmacist, allowing our doctors and nurses to focus on more complex conditions. August 2021

GP National Survey 2020

GP National Survey 2020 The scores of the judges – you – are in! Last year NHS England surveyed 2 million people across England. Thank you to the 141 patients locally who provided feedback. The practice’s decision not to rush to embrace online triage and consultation tools appears welcomed by our patients. Spilsby Surgery was rated highly in ease of phone contact, and experience of making an appointment. A special mention for our Care Navigation team – 95% of respondents appreciated their help. The question ‘How often do you see or speak to your preferred GP when you would like to?’ continues to perplex us. Our GP partners work full-time

Face masks: rights and responsibilities

Face masks: rights and responsibilities Clinically vulnerable patients have the right to feel safe when they attend a GP surgery. As society reopens further after 19 July, we have a choice whether to attend a nightclub or sports arena. People who might have limited vaccine protection shouldn’t face a difficult choice when they need to visit the NHS for essential care. Spilsby Surgery takes its responsibilities to patients very seriously and anticipates our community will want to do the same. Public Health England expects visitors to the Surgery to wear a surgical mask. Entry to our building remains by appointment whilst the number of Covid cases is high. We will

“I know it’s not Covid”

Symptoms of Covid infection aren’t confined to fever, a continuous cough, or loss of taste or smell. They can include headache, weakness or tiredness, muscle aches, runny nose, appetite loss and sore throat. Lateral Flow Tests – LFTs or rapid home tests – are used to look for infection in people who have no symptoms of Covid; to prevent them from spreading infection amongst family, in schools and in workplaces. LFTs are not accurate enough for people who have symptoms. If you are are unwell, you need a ‘gold standard’ PCR swab test that you book online or by phoning 119. As life returns to normal, all respiratory infections are

Helping us to help you

A GP practice is Derbyshire has written a very long letter to its patients explaining the challenges it faces caring for its patients – and its own staff – in the face of snowballing daily contacts. The problems they describe are common to primary care across the UK. Please click on the link. To summarise our own requests to patients: Please use self-care options for minor and short-lived illness, such as NHS 111 online, the High Street pharmacy, or common sense. If you are low, anxious or stressed, please contact Lincolnshire’s Mental Health Helpline on 0800 001 4331. If you have a question about care provided by a hospital or

Covid Vaccination Clinics

SOLAS GP Primary Care Network – Stickney Old Leake, Alford and Spilsby Surgeries – have started vaccinating our patients. The areas of the country receiving the vaccine were prioritised according to need. Individual patients will be contacted by telephone by a county call centre according to your risk. (Please don’t contact the Surgery.) Top of the list are the over 80s awaiting hospital treatment, care home residents and their staff. It will take some weeks to receive and administer the first dose of vaccine to all everybody, please be patient. The staff of Stickney Surgery, PCN Manager Andy Hill, and our own Jason Longstaff have worked hard to ready the

Congratulations Dr Howarth!

Dr James Howarth has been elected the new Clinical Lead to represent the quarter of a million patients and 25 GP practices in East Lincolnshire at NHS Lincolnshire CCG.  Spilsby Surgery is delighted that an overwhelming majority of GP practices voted in support of his nomination. Lincolnshire CCG faces a massive challenge reducing health inequality and improving care, whilst simultaneously supporting NHS workers’ response through a continuing pandemic. It will ensure that the voice of patients, communities and primary care will be heard in the new Integrated Care Systems that may come into being in 2021. We are confident that James will bring integrity, caring, selflessness, experience and intelligence to

Covid Vaccination

Covid Vaccination General Practice in England has been told Covid vaccination will begin from 14 December. This is a welcome first step in a return to normality for many of us. It will however be will be a lengthy exercise, taking several months. Since March, we have seen Government overpromise and under-deliver on PPE, testing, tracking and tracing, ‘throwing a protective ring’ around care homes, and extending flu vaccination to more people. We hope Covid vaccination roll-out will be different, but we must be prepared for delays and disappointments along the way. Spilsby Surgery expects that its team will be front and centre of hands-on vaccination, at the Franklin Hall,

Hospital Appointments

Due to increased waiting times for outpatient appointments GPs have been increasingly asked by patients to “expedite” their appointments. Lincolnshire GPs have discussed this with the Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group and and ULHT. It has been agreed that patients who are already under the care of a specialist or are waiting for a first appointment should first contact the hospital appointments team to identify when the next appointment will be. They can be contacted on 01522 573200 and select the appropriate option. If the hospital cannot provide you with this information, or you consider that the wait is too long, you should contact the specialist secretary. You should then explain

PPG Update

UPDATE FROM SPILSBY PPG – OCTOBER 2020 Due to the current COVID-19 situation the PPG feel it is not sensible or realistic to hold their regular meetings for the foreseeable future. The PPG would like to remind all registered patients that they are always willing to act upon their behalf should they have any concerns. Any concerns should be forwarded in writing to the Practice Manager (with whom the PPG are in regular contact) who will liaise with the PPG to discuss any issues.
